Welcome to Cru Kitchen & Bar

Nestled in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, Cru Kitchen & Bar balances its elegant décor with a casual ambiance.

Cozy up to a fireplace in winter or enjoy al fresco dining in warmer months as you choose from one of over 200 bottles of wine, selections by the glass and an inspiring list of flights and cocktails.

We proudly support small producers and sustainable farming. every wine on the menu has a story and a soul. Whether it’s a grower champagne, small family owned domaines, winemakers from multiple generations or just passionate winemakers, they all share a common philosophy about farming and wine making. All of the wines were carefully chosen for both their personality and the pure expression of where they’re from. We strive to find the best examples of all wines globally and hope you enjoy the story they tell.

Our menu is seasonal and based on traditional flavor combinations. we use both classic and modern techniques to prepare dishes that are delicious, fun and interesting. We make as much as we can in house which ensures that our food is fresh, healthy and of the utmost quality. This will include extensive stock and sauce making, butchering and baking.

Chef Alex Shalev

Alex was born in Bulgaria- originally pursuing an engineering degree at the University of Sofia.  His first cooking experience was during a summer abroad in the US, and when he returned  to Bulgaria he knew he had a passion for food and cooking.  Arriving in Chicago in 2004, his first job was doing basic prep work, peeling carrots and potatoes, washing dishes, and the normal introductory jobs you have to do to get in.  He quickly picked up techniques and kitchen management, learning all station work, and in 2006 was recruited to open Sola Restaurant with chef/owner Carol Wallack.  He served as Chef de Cuisine at Sola for 5 years before moving on to the Park Grill as the Executive Sous Chef, where he has been the lead in the creation of menus, promotion, and systems for the past 2 years.

Career highlights include guest chef appearances at the James Beard House in 2007 and 2010, winning Best Side Dish with the Sola Restaurant team at the 2008 Burger Bash at SOBE Fest in Miami, and winning the National Restaurant Association BBQ Cook Off in 2006 and 2008. Alex likes to cook with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. He always enjoys a challenge, and uses both classic and modern techniques to develop new dishes.  On his time off, Alex can be found watching Arsenal soccer with his wife Katie and their dog, Homer.
