Bacon Nation,

The time has come for us at Baconfest to give a huge round of thanks and applause to our awesome official media sponsor for 2012:  THE CHICAGO READER.

Director of Marketing, Kristen Kaza and the entire Reader team have been incredible partners over the past 2 years, helping us trumpet the glory of Baconfest throughout Chicagoland.  In collaboration with director Ky Dickens and MK Films, they’ve created two promo pieces featuring guest chefs and sponsors.  We love these short films so much and the level of artistry and care that went into making them is self-evident.  Most recently, with Mixologist Mike Ryan from Sable, they curated and coordinated a Bacon-Cocktail contest that was as inspiring as it was intoxicating (and these drinks had some kick!).

Please enjoy below some highlights from the Reader/BFC “Joint”:

The Bacon Cocktail Challenge

Over 30 entries were submitted out of which 4 Finalists were gathered on Sunday April 8th at Sable Kitchen and Bar.  The four finalists were Zach Piper, Elizabeth Licata, Andy Tokarski and Rebecca Skocha.  Each prepared a bacon-cocktail of their creation for judges Mike Ryan, Mike Sula and Stephen Cole (of Barrelhouse Flat).

Rebecca Skocha (below)

All four dazzled the judges with their bacon-cocktail elixirs of joy!

But there was one winner:  Zach Piper and his cocktail the Barded Black Bird.

For a the full recipe, please see Mike Sula’s blog post recapping the competition.

Thanks to all who entered, to our 4 Finalists, to the Judges and to Mike Ryan and Sable Kitchen and Bar for hosting the Finals.

Promo Video:  Bacon, the Cure All.

Last month a number of Baconfest Chicago Chefs got together to shoot this short video about the power of bacon saving the day!  Directed by Ky Dickens, the end product “Bacon, the Cure All” can be viewed below.  What a wonderful tribute to the bonding power of Bacon.  Special thanks to all of the amazing chefs who participated (credit list is at the end of the video), and to the actors and production crew who made this day a blast.

And of course last years masterpiece:  The Bacon Noir

Check out their special issue next week which includes info about “Reader Real Deals” for Baconfest restaurants and watch this space for word on the upcoming Baconfest/Reader Satellite Dinner featuring a bacon key ingredient dinner challenge – details TBA.

Thank you Chicago Reader for all of your support of Baconfest Chicago!!
